John Coltrane

Elevating jazz to spiritual heights, Coltrane's sound transcends time and space

John Coltrane’s musical journey began in the small town of Hamlet, North Carolina, but the echoes of his genius would eventually resonate throughout the world. Born on September 23, 1926, Coltrane was nurtured in a family that fostered his musical talents from an early age. His father was a tailor with a passion for music, exposing young John to instruments like the violin and clarinet, yet it was the saxophone that would become his instrument of choice and his voice of expression.

Coltrane’s early life was marked by significant personal loss, including the deaths of his father and grandfather within a relatively short period. After moving to Philadelphia in 1943, he pursued formal training at the Granoff Studios and the Ornstein School of Music, while absorbing the vibrant local jazz scene. It was here that Coltrane’s dedication to music intensified. Philadelphia catalyzed his development, providing him the opportunity to experiment with different forms of jazz.

After serving in the Navy during World War II, Coltrane played in various bands and honed his craft under greats such as Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson and Dizzy Gillespie. His big break came when he joined Miles Davis’s First Great Quintet in 1955, setting the stage for his rapid rise. This partnership was pivotal; under Davis’s wing, Coltrane developed the strength and tone that would become hallmarks of his style.

I believe in the sound of the universe; each note is a step towards understanding our place in it.
