Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, known as the "Queen of Tejano Music", was born on April 16, 1971, in Lake Jackson, Texas. Though she rose to fame as a Tejano singer, her life and career were deeply influenced by a rich tapestry of diverse musical styles, including blues and gospel.

Abraham Quintanilla, her father and first manager, maintained a deep appreciation for the blues and gospel that would eventually permeate Selena's musical landscape.
